After over 15 years of offering full-hybrid vehicles in India—including both imported and locally assembled models—Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) is gearing up to introduce two new electrified vehicles this year. The automaker will soon launch an all-electric Toyota Urban Cruiser and a mild-hybrid Toyota Fortuner, marking a significant step in its electrification strategy.

Here’s everything we know about these upcoming Toyota models:

1. Toyota Urban Cruiser EV

The upcoming Toyota Urban Cruiser EV is not to be confused with the rebadged version of the first-gen Maruti Vitara Brezza. Instead, it is a corporate cousin of the Maruti e Vitara, sharing its platform and key components while sporting a distinct Toyota identity.

Design & Styling

  • The front fascia takes inspiration from a hammerhead shark, giving it a sleek yet less aggressive look.
  • Features slim LED headlamps, a faux upper grille, and a simpler bumper with vertical side air inlets.
  • The overall silhouette and interior remain identical to the Maruti e Vitara.

Powertrain & Performance

Toyota is expected to offer the Urban Cruiser EV in two variants:

Standard-Range FWD

  • Motor: 105.8 kW (142 hp) / 192.5 Nm
  • Battery: 47.8 kWh (LFP)
  • 0-100 km/h: 9.6 seconds
  • Top Speed: 150 km/h
  • Range: 400+ km

Long-Range FWD

  • Motor: 128 kW (172 hp) / 192.5 Nm
  • Battery: 59.8 kWh (LFP)
  • 0-100 km/h: 8.7 seconds
  • Top Speed: 150 km/h
  • Range: 500+ km

Expected Launch

The Toyota Urban Cruiser EV is likely to debut in Q4 2025.

2. Toyota Fortuner Mild-Hybrid

Toyota is also introducing a mild-hybrid (MHEV) version of the Fortuner, aimed at improving fuel efficiency while retaining the SUV’s rugged appeal.

Powertrain & Technology

  • Engine: 2.8L turbocharged diesel (same as the regular Fortuner)
  • Transmission: 6-speed automatic
  • Drivetrain: Optional part-time 4WD
  • Mild-Hybrid System:
  • Belt-Integrated Starter Generator (BSG) – replaces the alternator
  • 48V lithium-ion battery (4.3 Ah, 13 cells)
  • DC-DC converter for energy recuperation

How It Works

  • The BSG acts as a motor-generator, charging the 48V battery during deceleration.
  • The stored energy powers the 12V system (lights, infotainment, etc.) via the DC-DC converter.
  • The BSG also provides up to 12 kW (16 hp) and 65 Nm of torque under acceleration, improving efficiency.

Performance & Efficiency

  • The diesel engine alone produces 201 hp and 500 Nm.
  • The mild-hybrid system enhances low-end torque and reduces fuel consumption slightly.

Expected Launch

The Toyota Fortuner Mild-Hybrid is expected to hit Indian showrooms by June 2025
